On February 2nd, 2025, the Green Aid Foundation marked World Wetlands Day with an impactful event at Orarwe Dam in Kehancha, Migori County. This year’s theme, "Wetlands Restoration," resonated deeply with the challenges faced by the Orarwe Dam, a critical wetland struggling under the weight of siltation and invasive water grass weeds.
The day was not only a celebration of wetlands but also a reminder of the urgent need for action. The event culminated in a bamboo planting initiative, aimed at rehabilitating the drying wetland and reviving its ecosystem. Bamboo, known for its rapid growth and ability to prevent soil erosion, was chosen as a sustainable solution to combat the dam’s degradation.
Orarwe Dam has long been a lifeline for the people of Kehancha, providing water for domestic use, agriculture, and even small-scale fishing. However, its current state paints a worrying picture. Siltation has significantly reduced its water-holding capacity, while invasive weeds have choked its surface, making it increasingly difficult for the community to depend on this vital resource.
The event brought together local residents, environmentalists, and volunteers, all united by a shared vision: to restore Orarwe Dam to its former glory. Speeches were made, highlighting the importance of wetlands in mitigating climate change, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining livelihoods.
But the task ahead is enormous, and it requires a collective effort. We call upon the government, private organizations, and well-wishers to join hands with us in rehabilitating the dying dam. Immediate interventions such as dredging to remove silt, controlling invasive species, and introducing more sustainable practices in the area are crucial.
Wetlands are not just about water; they are about life. The Orarwe Dam, once vibrant and full of promise, can once again become a thriving ecosystem that supports Kehancha's community and beyond.
Let’s take a step forward, together, to save this invaluable wetland. Green Aid Foundation remains committed to driving this initiative, but we cannot do it alone. With your support, we can ensure that Orarwe Dam continues to be a source of hope and sustenance for generations to come.
Join us in this journey of restoration. Together, we can make a difference!
